POSTPONED

Dr. Richard Emlet (Professor of Biology, Oregon Institute of Marine Biology) has informed us on Mar. 12, 2020, that the NAEC schedule for June 2020 will be postponed for 1 year. The group organizing it met the morning of March 12 and made this decision based on the uncertainty around COVID-19.

WHAT IS THIS SHORT COURSE ABOUT?

This short course is focused on strategies for de novo transcriptome assembly, quantitative analyses, and gene annotation of Echinoderm data using open-source software. The participants will install on their laptops a virtual machine image that already contains all software, examples, and course materials pre-installed and ready to use. All the course materials will be based on examples from echinoderms. The student learning outcomes are as follows: 1) understanding the importance of experimental design in order to ask biological questions of RNA-seq, 2) learning how to assess the quality of RNA-Seq data 3) performing normalization and reformatting procedures of RNA-Seq data, 4) performing basic statistical tests on high-throughput sequencing (HTS) data, and 5) understand some of the problems and solutions when analyzing RNA-seq data for gene annotation, and 6) how to leverage public databases as both a source of data and ways to share results.
